A complete guide to choosing the right vanilla product for every recipe

Vanilla comes in many forms, and each one has its strengths. Here is a breakdown to help you pick the right one for your needs.

Vanilla Beans (Pods)

Best for: Infusions, custards, ice cream, impressing guests

The purest form of vanilla. Split the pod lengthwise, scrape out the tiny seeds, and add them directly to your recipe. The pod itself can be steeped in liquids for extra flavor. One vanilla bean equals about 1 tablespoon of extract. Use vanilla beans when you want visible vanilla specks and the most authentic flavor experience.

Vanilla Extract

Best for: Baking, beverages, everyday cooking

The most versatile and convenient form. Our 5-Fold extract is concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Simply measure and add to your batter, dough, or drink. Vanilla extract works beautifully in cakes, cookies, muffins, smoothies, coffee, and hot chocolate. It is heat-stable, so the flavor survives baking.

Vanilla Powder

Best for: Dry mixes, dusting, no-liquid recipes

Ground vanilla beans in pure powder form. It does not contain alcohol (unlike extract), so it is perfect for recipes where you do not want any liquid addition. Great for sprinkling on cappuccinos, mixing into dry cake mixes, protein shakes, or adding to spice blends. It also works well in white-colored desserts where you do not want the brown tint of extract.

Vanilla Paste

Best for: When you want both convenience and visible seeds

A thick, syrupy blend of vanilla extract, vanilla seeds, and natural thickener. Vanilla paste gives you the beautiful seed specks of whole beans with the easy measuring of extract. Use it 1:1 as an extract replacement. It is especially wonderful in buttercream frostings, panna cotta, cheesecakes, and anything where you want that premium look.

Vanilla Sugar

Best for: Sweetening with vanilla flavor

Sugar infused with real vanilla — perfect for tea, coffee, baking, and desserts. Simply use it wherever you would use regular sugar but want a hint of vanilla. It makes an excellent finishing touch on French toast, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
